Derek Jeter autographed items to be auctioned at January 21 dinner

STURGIS – Among the evening’s highlights at the January 21 St. Joseph County Sustainability Council fundraising dinner will be the opportunity for attendees to bid on Yankee memorabilia autographed by Derek Jeter. The event will begin at 5 p.m. at the Sturges-Young Auditorium and will feature speaker, Mark Newman, Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations for the New York Yankees.

Newman will bring a variety of Yankee-autographed auction items and will speak about the “Yankee Way.” He will explain how this philosophy of comprehensive team-building can be applied to the local community by looking at the collective well-being of the area.
The silent auction and cash bar cocktail hour will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a sit-down dinner at 6 p.m. and Newman’s presentation at 8 p.m. Other evening highlights will include music by the Sturgis High School Chamber Orchestra, door prizes from area businesses and the opportunity to bid on a Hewlett Packard Compaq nx6110 Notebook PC.

“It will be a once-in-a-lifetime occasion,” said Jay Newman, superintendent of the St. Joseph County ISD and founder of the Sustainability Council. “It’s a rare event to bring a member of the New York Yankees to our County. Baseball fans won’t want to miss this speaker and the ability to bid on genuine Yankees auction items.”

Dinner reservations are due by January 17. Tickets will be $25 per person and can be purchased by calling Sturges-Young Auditorium at (269) 651-8541, the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce at (269) 651-5758 and the Three Rivers Chamber of Commerce at (269) 278-8193. Tickets are also available for Mr. Newman’s presentation alone at the cost of $10 each. For more information about the event or to sponsor a table, call Kari Newman at (269) 279-3956 or the St. Joseph County ISD at (269) 467-5400. Table sponsorships providing corporate recognition are $125 and help support the Sustainability Council.

The mission of the Sustainability Council of St. Joseph County is to provide for the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future.

“We intend to do this by promoting a positive climate for business growth in St. Joseph County and the surrounding area,” Jay Newman said. “In doing this, we want to encourage the development of an entrepreneurial spirit in our youth and where appropriate in current employees. We desire to achieve this in a way that honors and supports the great people of this region and preserves our marvelous and beautiful environment.”
