Southern is a Virginia-based holding company with headquarters in
Norfolk. It controls a major freight railroad, Norfolk Southern Railway Company,
and owns a natural resources company and a telecommunications company. The
railway operates 21,500 route miles in 22 eastern states, the District of
Columbia and the province of Ontario. It serves 20 ports and connects with rail
partners in the West and Canada, linking customers to markets around the world.
Norfolk Southern provides comprehensive logistics services and offers the most
extensive intermodal network in the East. In St. Joseph County, the railroad

The
Michigan Southern Railroad (MSO) has been an operating short
line railroad since 1986. The MSO serves a diverse commodity base including
scrap metal and paper, fertilizer, aggregates, animal by-products, and
manufactured and food products. The rail line is based in White Pigeon, Michigan
and serves the following communities: White Pigeon, Sturgis, Burr Oak, Bronson,
Batvia and Coldwater. It maintains connections with Norfolk Southern Railroad in
White Pigeon and CSX Railroad in Fort Wayne, Indiana (via Haulage rights). For

I-80/90, the
Indiana Toll Road,
traverses the southern boundary of St. Joseph County. |

US-131 is a north/south highway providing direct access
to I-94 in Kalamazoo (15 minutes) and I-80/90 south of White Pigeon (5 minutes).

Pigeon. |

M-66 is a north/south highway providing direct access to
I-94 in Battle Creek (45 minutes) and I-80/90 south of Sturgis (5 minutes).

US-12 (
Saulk Heritage Trail) is an
east/west highway providing direct access to I-69 in Coldwater (45 minutes) and
I-94 in New Buffalo (60 minutes). Communities served: Mottville, White Pigeon,
Sturgis and Burr Oak. |

|
|
M-60 is an east/west highway providing direct access to
I-69 north of Coldwater (45 minutes). To the west, M-60 merges with US-12 in
Niles and provides direct access to US-31 in Niles (45 minutes) and I-94 in New
Buffalo (60 minutes). Communities served: Three Rivers, Mendon and
Leonidas. |

M-89 is an east/west highway providing direct access to
US-131 in Three Rivers and US-12 in Coldwater (45 minutes) near I-69.
Communities served: Three Rivers, Centreville, Nottawa and
Colon. |

M-40 travels west north of Three Rivers to Marcellus (15
minutes) before turning north to I-94 in Paw Paw (45 minutes). Community served:
Three Rivers. |
